Flemington – Derby Day

Rail Position: True Entire Circuit

Track Condition: Good 4

Weather: Fine

Flemington

Race 6

Coolmore Stud Stakes

1200 mtr Straight Race Group 1

Straight race and likely sees them all draw to the middle of the track, with a near capacity field of 16 runners it’s a charge not for the fainthearted and some luck and a good ride will be needed. The two obvious chances #1 Shinzo (drawn 4) and #2 Cylinder (drawn 14) will look to tuck in and sit just off the speed and early leaders on either side of the leading bunch, the outside lanes (wider of middle of the track) or down closer to the rail have been the favoured lines over recent months.

#1 Shinzo ($4.60) and #2 Cylinder ($3.60) both come out of the strong Sydney sprint race The Everest and look to drop back in quality here, both from leading stables and are the two I want to work around. Cylinder have a lovely run and drag into the Everest, might have looked a bit better than it was? but is quality, Shinzo had excuses when back and had little room until late and then strong to the line, this looks his grand final set up? The knock out might be #18 Stretan Angel ($7.50) and she has been very well backed through recent days.

$50 outlay

$30 on #1 Shinzo @ $4.60

$20 on #18 Stretan Angel @ $7.50

Flemington

Race 7

Victoria Derby

2500 mtr 3yo Staying Race Group 1

Always a big ask for young developing 3yo’s to step out to a testing  Derby distance race of 2500mtrs, #4 Riff Rocket ($2.30) has well exposed form and the Waller + McDonald combination and if can get the race tempo run to suit and held up for the final shot at them the one to beat, but not for me at the very short price.

Like the prep and set up of #8 Gates ($14.00) latest was only second up and beat home #1 Apulia who then came out and won to frank that formline last Saturday, has the Peter Moody polish and “set for this race” look about the prep and Moody’s winning partner joc Luke Nolen rides. Going with the prep set up and the value.

$50 outlay

Each Way $20 win $30 place on #8 Gates @ $14 and $3.70

Flemington

Race 8

Empire Rose Stakes

1600 mtr Fillies and Mares Race Group 1

Mile (1600mtrs) race for Fillies and Mares can prove a tricky affair and many win this at a big price so if you like one at odds do have something on it.

Looks a stack of early speed and tempo here with leaders and on pace runners drawn right across the barrier jump line up, and this race tempo should set things up for strong quality run on chances.

Like three here with what looks that right set up and quality to win, #4 Atishu ($4.60) and #3 Hope In Your Heart ($7.00) and #16 More Secrets ($15.00) with Atishu my main focus. Trainer Chris Waller has a knack at the right race set up and focus and like a few here this looks its set up and Grand Final, he got it right 12 months ago targeting a Flemington carnival race third up and made the key switch with McDonald then taking the ride to win at this track by a comfortable 2 lengths, now returns here off three runs but has had a 3 week freshen up and comes out of some quality formlines, maps to get a nice run and looks the one to beat. Hope In Your Heart and More Secrets both bring nice form and set ups here and each look nice chances to be right in the finish in an open race.

$50 outlay

$14 on #3 Hope In Your Heart @ $7.00

$30 on #4 Atishu @ $4.60

$6 on #16 More Secrets @ $15.00

Boxed Exacta (to run 1st and 2nd): #3, #4, #16

Flemington

Race 9

The Damien Olliver

1400 mtr Race Group 2

The great Damien Oliver soon to retire from race riding and has this race now named in his honour as the last on the program – he rides the top weight #1 Vilana in the race as well.

Certainly a tricky way to finish the day with 16 runners over 1400mtrs and what looks many chances. #12 Kalino ($9.00) Waller runner off short freshen up, comes off nice win that has since produced nice formlines (Umgawa and Detonator Jack) and goes well when fresh; #1 Vilana (6.00) was close up first up in strong Sydney race, has won 2 of 4 when second up; #10 Here To Shock ($9.00) had to work hard early in Group 1 race (Toorak), prior had nice form around Antino and gets nice drop in the weights and #5 Tamerlane ($4.60) off two quality runs this prep including latest win and now gets McDonald and a soft draw. Another open race with many chances.

$50 outlay

$25 on #10 Here To Shock @ $9.00

$25 on #12 Kalino @ $9.00

Rosehill – Golden Eagle Day

Rail Position: True Entire Circuit

Track Condition: Good 4

Weather: Fine but possible light showers

Rosehill

Race 7

Giga Kick Stakes

1300 mtr

Quality sprint race and we have the winner and close up 3rd out of The Everest to again clash and look to make this a two horse race.

#1 Think About It ($1.75) has won 11 of 12 starts and taken all before him through recent months including the Group 1 Stradbroke and then the richest race on turf in The Everest, high quality, did have all the favours with the run of the race latest but quality horses do make their own luck! #4 Private Eye ($3.00) from the same Joe Pride stable as the fav, ran 3rd in The Everest, won this race last year giving them a cold as he rushed past them to the winning post and is 3 from 6 when third up and 2 from 2 this track and distance.

Going with the price and value in #4 Private Eye but also love his set up, step to 1300, third up and form at this track and distance.

$50 outlay

$50 on #4 Private Eye @ $3.00

Rosehill

Race 8

Golden Eagle

1500 mtr

$10mil in prizemoney here and so has attracted a big field and what looks many chances.

#1 Hawaii Five Oh ($4.80) comes off last prep G3 win in Brisbane (1400mtrs) then close up 3rd in the Group 1 Stradbroke behind Think About It, returned this prep at the sprint distances inc latest two runs when excuses with a lost plate and or coming from well back in high quality affairs, now steps to 1500 and draws a low gate and good map; #12 Obamburumai ($10.00) is the Japanese visitor who brings some quality ratings and form off a very lightly raced career to date (5 starts 3 wins); CJ Waller certainly has quality chances on their home track in #5 Kovalica ($9.50) but drawn wide and awkwardly; while other visitors in the female Perth superstar #16 Amelia’s Jewel ($3.90) and NZer mare #18 Legarto ($6.00) will each have admirers. Happy to throw in #8 Strait Acer ($41.00) as a knock out chance at a big price off its booming finish 2nd in the lead up Silver Slipper. Certainly looks a deep race chasing the big prizemoney payday!

Happy to pass on #16 Amelia’s Jewel after winning a high pressure race 2nd up in track record time she then clearly felt that when failing 3rd up and now comes to Sydney; am working around #1 Hawaii Five Oh #12 Obamburumai #18 Legarto and something small on #8 Strait Acer to place.

$50 outlay

$20 on win #1 Hawaii Five Oh @ $4.80

$9 on win #12 Obamburumai $10

$16 on win #18 Legarto @ $6.00

$5 on place #8 Strait Acer @ $ best tote

Boxed Exacta (to run 1st and 2nd): #1, #8, #12 #18

Rosehill

Race 9

Gold Cup

2000 mtr

Big watch on the English import #6 Canberra Legend ($3.40) trained by the very astute James Ferguson who has a quality record of travelling his horses to win a target race, looks to get in very light at the weights (53kg) its best 3 ratings would win this well enough, just needs some luck from the wider draw. Melbourne visitor #12 Shock ‘Em Ova looks the other key chance and has met with heavy support. Does look a race of two.

$50 Outlay

$28 on win #6 Canberra Legend @ $3.60

$22 on win #6 Canberra Legend @ $4.60

Rosehill

Race 10

BM78 Handicap

1100 mtr

Sprint race to finish the program at Rosehill. Fav #3 Way To The Stars ($2.60) looks well found but equally hard to beat, on pace first up to win then gave winner (Stanislaus) 7kgs when 2nd in good time and a race that has since provided a Group 3 winner, kept fresh for this and looks the one to beat.

$50 Outlay

$50 on win #3 Way To The Stars @ $2.60
